30 Steps Toward Healing – Step 11: Acknowledging Guilt

30 Steps Toward Healing - Step 11: Acknowledging Guilt

“Guilt isn’t always a rational thing,. Guilt is a weight that will crush you whether you deserve it or not.”   Maureen Johnson,

Guilt is unresolved anger that we have turned inward toward ourselves and usually relates to something we thing we should have or shouldn’t have done.  Some levels of guilt can be healthy when it helps us to stay true to our values and to keep us on track.  Guilt only becomes a problem when we cannot forgive ourselves and let go.

The guilt associated with pregnancy loss can arise from decisions we are forced to make in the moment or during our pregnancy which then are judged or second guessed in later weeks.  We are all confronted by decisions to act or not act during the course of an event like this, the challenge is to learn to live with any decisions that we made and find a place of acceptance with what has led to the guilt we might be feeling.

Action: Identify the things that you are feeling guilty about.  Ask yourself to accept that you did the best you could with the information you had at the time and make a conscious decision to leave the guilt behind.
